Arts For Life names new Executive Director

February 18, 2021 | By Snee Howard

Arts For Life is happy to announce Katharine Phlegar Broughton as our next Executive Director. She will officially step into the role on March 15, 2021 but has been with Arts For Life since 2016, serving as the Program Coordinator in the Durham Chapter at Duke Children’s Hospital and Health Center. In that role, Katharine successfully launched and managed a program expansion to outpatient clinic areas and supported a growing group of community and hospital volunteers. More recently, Katharine has coordinated grant writing for the organization and helped to develop content and programs for our virtual platform, Arts For Life Anywhere.

Katharine has believed in the healing power of the arts since her undergraduate days and has been bringing creativity to pediatric patients and families since 2010. She graduated from Davidson College with a degree in studio art and an emphasis in drawing and printmaking. Katharine then completed her graduate studies in Washington, DC, earning a Masters degree in Art Therapy from The George Washington University.

Upon graduation, Katharine joined the staff of the nonprofit Tracy’s Kids, providing art therapy services in the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders for the Children’s National Health System. There, she facilitated a group open studio and provided individual bedside art sessions to patients and families. After eight years in DC, Katharine returned to her North Carolina roots and began her career with Arts For Life in Durham. She now lives in Chapel Hill with her family and enjoys creating her own art in her spare time.
